BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Garima Mathur joined JIIT as Research Associate in December 2010. Before joining JIIT, Dr. Garima worked as postdoctoral fellow at JUIT, Waknaghat, Himachal Pradesh. She worked as postdoctoral fellow at Department of Biochemical Engineering and Biotechnology, IIT Delhi. She has worked for almost a year, as Scientist at Novozymes South Asia Pvt. Ltd., Bangalore.

She holds a first class Bachelor in Science (Biotechnology) from Kurukshetra University, masters in science (Biotechnology) from Panjab University, Chandigarh and Ph.D in Biotechnology from IIT Roorkee. She is university topper and gold medalist. She has worked in biodegradation of high density polyethylene by soil fungal isolates during her doctoral research.

Her awards include GATE (AIR 53), CSIR-UGC JRF/NET, Agricultural Scientist Recruitment Board- NET (2003), Women Scientist Scholarship Scheme (2003) and has availed CSIR fellowship, from MHRD, GOI. Her area of interest includes production of biopolymers from fungi and bacteria, enzyme production, plant tissue culture and environmental biotechnology.

RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS

Our group is currently involved in two major projects:

Production of microbial polymers and composites, their production and characterization

Exploring the therapeutic potential of commercial Indian medicinal plants

Rapid surge in levels of environmental pollution generated massively by excessive dumping of plastic based materials has attracted much interest in the use of bio based materials as alternative materials. We are particularly interested in the production and characterization of two biopolymers: bacterial cellulose (BC) and fungal chitosan (FC) and development of composites/blends with various applications.

We are also developing in vitro culture systems for Stevia rebaudiana and studying the effects of various biotic and abiotic parameters on yield of steviol glycosides. Major focus of our research is to identify candidate genes involved in biosynthetic pathways and study changes in their expression patterns under stress conditions.
